Association for Children with Cancer
Presentation of the Association for Children with Cancer, in Danish called Foreningen Cancerramte Børn.
Every year 160 children in Denmark get cancer, whereof 45 will not survive the disease. These children have over the passed ten years been paid more and more attention, as many new treatments have been taking into use. Increased focus has also been connected to the importance of the well being of the children and many organisations have looked thoroughly into the problems of having children/teenagers hospitalised together with adult patients. We know that a good and well functioning live besides the hospital is of outmost importance for the children's recovery.
The association for Children with Cancer is a non-political, humanitarian organisation, solely driven by volunteers. The work for the association consists primarily of creating activities for children with cancer and their families. Children with cancer are medically treated very intensively, which is causing significant weakening of their immune defense. Due to the risk of infections, the children cannot have normal activities amongst other children and adults.
The objective for our association is to arrange as many so called closed arrangements/activities for the children as possible. This is to ensure that also children with cancer get a possibility to visit interesting places, such as the Zoo, Fantasy World, Tivoli or for going to the cinema. The association arranges every year a weekend for the families with a cancer child, where children with cancer and their relatives can have a small break in comfortable surroundings together with other people in the same situation.
A second objective with our association is to act as link between hospitalised children/parents and the University Hospital of Copenhagen and its staff. As a consequence of our excellent relations to the staff at the infant oncology centre, we also arrange lectures for relatives dealing with relevant issues. These lectures are planned in close co-operation with and performed by the doctors at the centre.
We are economically dependent on the contingency from our approximately 500 family members, grants and foundations. We are furthermore collecting means by having a yearly tombola at a market for shopkeepers. In the tombola we are giving away many different winnings, which we have received from our sponsors.
As a matter of form, I can inform you, that the Danish Tax Authorities have approved our association as recipient of donations, according to the Danish "ligningsloven § 8 A".
